Alpine Swallowtail Resin Earrings -- Parnassius clodius or Parnassius smintheus
A common white butterfly with red hind-wing spots, and a frequent companion to hikers. It occupies mountain meadows and foothills where the caterpillar host plants are common. The larvae feed on plants in the bleeding heart family and stone crop.
Although part the swallowtail family, the adult lacks tails. In flight it may look like a common white butterfly initially, but the flight pattern is the same as any other swallowtail butterfly.
Unlike most swallowtails, this species lays eggs in summer near dried up host plants. The eggs overwinter, then hatch in spring with larvae feeding on young leaves.
