Two-Tailed Swallowtail Post Earrings -- Papilio multicaudata
The second largest butterfly in North America, or THE largest depending on which researcher is being quoted :) These are quite a sight!
This common, large butterfly, graces the dry desert regions in Eastern Washington and Oregon south into Mexico. The larvae feed on Chokecherry, and also ornamental Ash trees in city plantings.
There is one main late spring/early summer flight in Oregon, with a second smaller flight in mid-August.
We rear many of these each summer in Pendleton, Oregon. Neighbors kindly lend their chokecherry trees to raise caterpillars nearby.
