Alpine Swallowtail Teardrop Necklace -- Parnassius clodius
A common white butterfly with red hind-wing spots, and a frequent companion to hikers. It occupies mountain meadows and foothills where the caterpillar host plants are common. The larvae feed on plants in the bleeding heart family.
Although part the swallowtail family, the adult lacks tails. In flight it may look like a common white butterfly initially, but the flight pattern is the same as any other swallowtail butterfly.
Unlike most swallowtails, this species lays eggs in summer near dried up bleeding heart host plants. The eggs overwinter, then hatch in spring with larvae feeding on fresh bleeding heart leaves which erupt in late winter/early spring.
Pendants use the back wing section only. White, black lines, and those unmistakable red spots. Simplistic beauty.
