The second largest silkmoth in the Pacific Northwest, we raise a large brood of these each season. Cocoons also also typically available in winter for shipping inside Oregon.
Chonky, colorful caterpillars feed on a variety of different trees. The dark brown rough silk cocoons overwinter.
We bring females up the Umatilla RIver in spring for outbreeding. They emit a pheremone to attract wild males, and early in the morning we collect the female and wild male. That evening they separate and the female lays 200-300 eggs. The process begins again.
