The Viceroy Butterfly is a beautiful mimic, and is commonly mistaken for the Monarch Butterfly.
Viceroy's overwinter as a small larvae in a little cocoon called a hibernacula, then continue feeding in early spring on willow leaves. These butterflies have two or three broods each summer, and are found in riparian habitats in the desert Columbia River basin and tributaries.
Item Details:
- You will receive one Viceroy Butterfly chrysalis, inspected for quality and weight before shipping. These pupae are VERY WIGGLY :)
- Chrysalid will eclose/hatch around the middle of July 2025
- We guarantee shipping a live chrysalis. Because this is a live animal, there are no other guarantees after shipment.
- We recommend ordering two (2) or more as occasionally one won't make it through or experience issues eclosing. This is rare, but does occur in nature from time to time.
General Directions for Viceroy Butterfly chrysalid:
- Keep inside in a pop-up tent/rearing cage (also available on our site), on top of paper towel. You can also hang the chrysalis by its silk from the top of the tent, so it can emerge more naturally.
- Mist the chrysalis daily, as inside air is quite dry.
- It will eclose/hatch sometime early to middle July, depending on temperature.
- Wild release
