Mourning Cloak Butterfly Resin Earrings-- Nymphalis antiopa
A beautiful butterfly with black, blue, and rimmed with vibrant gold, this is also one of the earliest butterflies to be seen in the Pacific Northwest. It is common from low valleys to high mountainous areas, in desert regions along river courses, and in our rainy western valleys.
Adult Mourning Cloaks overwinter in old barns, tree hollows, under rocks and logs to emerge when the first warm weather brings out flowers and tree sap to nectar on.
There are multiple broods, with caterpillars feeding on many different host plants with a preference for willows. Caterpillars are gregarious when small and can form masses on tree branches as they feed together.
